CRIDERSVILLE — A Wapakoneta man was killed in a fiery wrong-way crash along Interstate 75 near Cridersville early Saturday, according to an official with the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Lt. Scott Carrico, commander of the Wapakoneta post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, said troopers began receiving calls around 12:55 a.m. Saturday of a pickup truck being driven southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 75. Troopers from the Lima and Wapakoneta posts were dispatched in an effort to intercept the wrong-way driver.

As troopers continued to search for the vehicle, Carrico said, the driver of the pickup crashed head-on into a commercial semi-tractor trailer near Cridersville. As a result of the crash, both vehicles caught fire.

The driver of the semi, Ajaib S. Nanreh, 49, of Brampton, Ontario, was able to escape the burning truck and was taken to Lima Memorial Health System for treatment of minor injuries, Carrico said. Nanreh was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the 2000 pickup, Duane Hower, 36, of Wapakoneta, was pronounced dead at the scene, Carrico said. Troopers said it is believed the collision caused Hower’s fatal injuries. Carrico said it is unknown whether Hower was wearing a seat belt or whether alcohol played a role in the crash.

Carrico said the interstate was closed from the time of the crash until 9 a.m. while crews cleared the roadway and investigated the crash.

The state patrol was assisted at the scene by the Cridersville Fire Department and EMS, Cridersville Police, Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio Department of Transportation, Auglaize County Engineer’s Office and the Auglaize County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

The crash remains under investigation.
